Page: 1   2

Spelling/Punctuation/Grammatical Errors:

For most HR managers the spelling/punctuation/grammatical errors are the most annoying mistakes that they see on resumes. Your spell-checker is not enough! You must read through the resume once for accuracy of numbers, dates, city names, etc., once for missing/extra words, and once more for spelling. Make sure that the meaning of your sentences is clear.

Read and re-read your final resume. Have people who know you well also read it and get their opinion. After you get their feedback, revise the resume so that it's 100 percent error-free.

Wrong Resume Format:

The resume format is very important. The two widely used formats are the chronological resume and the functional resume. No matter which format you choose, you must ensure that the resume format supports your objective.

Over-use of Bullets:

Bullet points are used to draw the reader's attention to key accomplishments. Remember not every statement require bullet points. You can maximize the visual impacts by combining the use of paragraphs and bulleted statements.

Not your Own Resume:

Most job seekers do mistake of borrowing a copy of resume from a friend or even copying accomplishment statements from resume books. This way you are at a risk of the hiring manager reading that book and seeing your resume in there. Also your accomplishments, skills, and abilities deserve to be showcased in an original way that best suits you not somebody else. Similarly you can not fit into accomplishments, skills, and abilities of someone else.

Poorly Written Resume:

Many job seekers try to write a resume in a hurry without taking time to evaluate who they are, what they can do for an organization, and why an organization will want to hire them. Your resume should show key understanding of the audience, it should convey strong and concise message of qualifications and relate your past successes to the hiring organizations immediate needs.

Sometimes when we try too hard to prove a point, or to appear different, we end up sabotage our efforts. Be cautious about the techniques you use to highlight your differences. Also be careful that your resume is not the place to voice your personal opinions, nor should you go into detail about any negative incidents that you may have experienced. Remember, your resume is to get you the interview.

Keep your resume simple and professional. Do not use fancy paper or paper with graphics. Be very careful and know your audience. Do make it easy for employers to understand why you are perfect for the position.

Do not submit a resume longer than one page. Be concise as no one wants to read four pages of boring details. Do not include your picture and let them see you in person. Never list poor references. If you do not have any good ones then no need to list them at all. Also use a professional e-mail address. An email address such as dreamGuy@yahoo.com is probably not going to get a follow up reply.
