Beware of Top Resume Mistakes!!

Most of us are of the view that we know how to create a resume and how to spell check it. But unfortunately most of us are not aware that how a winning resume is written. This is true that mistakes in your resume can kill your career and this is also true that you don't have any control over whether you will be getting a call for job, what questions will be asked during interview and whether you will be able to get a call for second interview or not. However luckily you are able to control how you can build your first impression with a well-written resume that will not get trashed along with the rest of that giant stack. So here are for you some top resume mistakes that you should avoid in order to create a successful resume.

No objective or summary:

If you do not add objective or summary in your resume then you are going on the wrong way. This makes busy employer read all the way through to figure out what kind of job you are suited for. If you start your resume with a clear objective or a focused summary then it helps reader identify what you want to do for him or her and greatly improve your results.

Put your objective at the top of your resume and be specific about the position you're applying for. This section must be compelling and showcase the immediate contributions you can bring to an organization. Do not get the company's name wrong. Check it and double-check it! Compliment the company and make them feel that you have read their mission statement and that you fit into it.

Not focusing on the Right things:

Another common and biggest mistake in most resumes is that the job seeker focuses more on their career aspirations or desire to make money. Starting your resume with "To work in an organization where I can utilize my skills with potential for career advancement” is not a good choice. However starting your resume with “Seeking a position where 8 years of management experience will add value to operations” will create a positive impression and the employer would be willing to talk to someone like you who has offered his services to contribute to operations and add to profitability.

Remember your focus should be on helping the employer meet his goals. Also it is far more important to spend most of your time talking about what you accomplished and how you made yourself valuable to past employers. Mention how you increased the product turnover and how much your trainings were beneficial for the trainees. A focused job objective tells the reader the type of position you are seeking and describes key skills you can offer.

Big Words and Clichés:

Many job seekers do the mistake of writing too many big words. The employer will get bored of the resume that is not clear and to the point, time is wasted and your resume goes in the trash.

Do not an over-used phrases/ expressions. The HR Manager would most likely move on to the next resume if he finds a resume that contains clichés. “Can work independently but as part of a team”, "Pays attention to detail", "Demonstrated ability to...", "Fine tuned interpersonal skills", "Reliable" and "...several years experience in..." are some of the clichés that you should immediately eliminate from resume. Take you time and try to come up with some creative examples to prove your claim that you possess these characteristics.

Simplify! When employers have to sift through a pile of resumes, they will automatically be drawn to the resume that is easier for them to read. Combined with strong resume copy, a clean and easy to read resume layout will generate more positive responses.
